Why the  BIG  2 Ton Double Cardan CVs?

Torque rating decreases by the cosine of the angle that the CV has to handle. The higher the angle the lower the torque rating, so the CV must be BIGGER and stronger to compensate. The name of the game is "BIG" when it comes to high angle. BIGGER means higher torque rating.  At 25-30 degrees, there is nothing left for a 1310 or half ton CV at 1600 ft-lbs. It is at it's maximum angle range and it means it will break. On the other hand, a BIG CV 2ton with 3000 ft-lbs torque rating at 5 degrees, is used to operate at 30 degrees. This is cruising for this BIG CV because it still has a good torque rating and 15 to 30 degrees of flex remaining (depending on what BIG CV is used).

Once you choose a BIG CV, the next thing you have to do is make sure that it fits. Currently known transmission and transfer case combos that do not allow large CVs are CHEVY - Turbo 400 with 205 and FORD -  C6 with a 205. These are out of the factory combos. If you do a after market combo, be careful what you choose, making sure you have plenty of room. Our BIG CVs range from 4.7 (45 degrees max)  to 7 (80 degrees max) inches in diameter. Some times the end of the CVs hit the tranny pan and sometimes the center of the CV interferes. These instance occur 5 - 10 percent of the customers.

   Note: One failure in the 5 years we have offer this CV. If you have an extreme offroad vehicle try this.
    A non-daily drive CV is saving the day, everyday, for the hi-riders and those that put large/long engines in little jeeps yielding one ugly angle. Well fear not the builder of extreme drive shaft is here.

   This CV is a competition CV for front drive shaft for super duty fords, blazers, dodges, rock crawling buggies, shorty's for jeep rear, or for any one not able to connect the transfer case to the axle. They are balance like any other drive shaft because of our find tuning of the CV after it gets here.

   This CV will operate at a continuous angle of 45 degrees maximum and droops to 80 degrees for the wheel droop.

   This CV 7” diameter fits most applications and, if it doesn’t, then there is the BAD BOY JUNIOR, which is a 5.25 inches diameter CV. It can be operated at 40 degrees maximum and droops to 60 degree. This CV is more expensive to make but provides the customer another option where nothing else will do.

We can also shim the CV to push it out further from the transfer case
 to avoid interference(Chevy HDs). This is needed on the Chevy HDs to put a high angle CV on the front drive shaft.

NOTE THAT IN THE SHIMMED DRIVE SHAFT ABOVE, ANY CV MAY BE USED, ie PERF for those that turn all the time (late model Dodges).

This custom yoke or flange style is used for the HD Chevys at the output of the TC. Depending on the CV needed, it can slide in and out or it can be spot welded to the output on very high lifts where PERF OR BAD BOY CVs are needed. This CV combo works great for 6 inch super lifts.


How do you know if it will fit?
   Cut out a  cardboard of the diameter of the CV of interest and go under the truck. Start at the yoke Or the flat flange at the transfer case. Go out 5 to 8 inches from that point and down 1.5 inches. This is where the 1.5 inch thick and 7” diameter flange will be.

REMEMBER, we can shim the CVs to be 5”to 8” out so that any interference can be by-passed. Try to keep it at 5 inches.

HOW TO ORDER

   All large CVs  require a flange as opposed to a yoke at the output of the transfer case. A flange is a flat piece of metal with four bolt holes as opposed to a yoke that takes a u-joint. If you have a yoke, then you must provide the type of transfer case that you have so that we can provide you with an output flange. If you don’t have a flange, order a flange for your transfer case under flange in the COMPONENTS section under FLANGES.

   Measure the working length of the drive shaft under as instructed in the HOW TO MEASURE A DRIVE SHAFT SECTION with the existing yokes or flanges.

THE CV USED ON THE HALF TON '04 DODGES DO NOT PERFORM WHEN THE TRUCK IS LIFTED.  SEND IN YOU FRONT DRIVE SHAFT AND WE WILL MAKE YOU A CUSTOM YOKE OR FLANGE THAT YOU CAN BOLT TO THE OUTPUT SHAFT AFTER DRILLING AND TAPPING A HOLE AT THE END OF THE OUTPUT SHAFT. THE KIT INCLUDES A HIGH ANGLE 40 DEGREE SHAFT BUILT TO YOUR LENGTH.  MEASURE FROM THE TIP OF THE OUTPUT SHAFT TO THE CENTER OF THE UJOINT AT THE PINION.

THE 45 DEGREES DRIVE SHAFT IS YOUR ALTERNATIVE TO A  DAILY DRIVER REAR DRIVE SHAFT

 Now at a two ton capacity the CV handles high continuous angles of up to 35 degrees.

Center needle bearing rated at 8,000 RPM with a torque rating of up to 3000 ft-lbs. Remember,

that the torque rating goes down by the cosine of the angle. So we start with a higher torque CV, hence

a bigger CV, so that at 30 degrees, the torque rating is still over what most rigs can put out.

A half ton 1310 stock CV is rated at 1600 ft-lbs and it will not suffice for a heavy duty performance rig.
